The fields are set for the 2021-22 Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament qualifiers. The eight teams for the ANGT Munich from January 21-23, 2022: ALBA Berlin, Basket Brno, Casademont Zaragoza, FC Bayern Munich, Orange 1 Bassano, Real Madrid and Zalgiris Kaunas. The eighth team will be a Next Generation Team selected at a later date by Adidas staff. And as an added bonus, here are some players to watch from all teams. Please note, these are NOT official roster lists - solely projections by TTC.
ALBA Berlin
Berlin are one of the regulars in the ANGT and the team will undoubtedly be competitive. The top player on the team will be Nils Machowski with Jannis Berger and Rikus Schulte helping carry the biggest load for the Germans. Other players to watch include Jamal Entezami, Elias Rapieque and 2005-born Nikola Tomic.
Basket Brno
Brno are making their second appearance at the ANGT and their leader will clearly by Jakub Necas, who made the All-Tournament Team of the ANGT Istanbul last season. The forward has been playing this season for Brno’s NBL top flight team and averaging 8.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 25 minutes. Necas will have some help in what could be a team that picks up an upset or two. Simon Svoboda has dominated the both the Czech second division 1Liga and U19 leagues this season. A couple of other names to watch include Lukas Olbort, Adam Lukes and Marek Pulpan.
Casademont Zaragoza
Zaragoza will have one of the most anticipated players in the competition in 2005-born Aday Mara, who last season stood out despite being two years younger. Mara has already made his debut with Zaragoza’s pro team. Both he and Lucas Langarita were on Spain’s extended roster for the FIBA U16 European Challengers before Spain pulled out of the event. There is also Serbian big man Pavle Stosic and Swede Villiam Garcia. A couple other players to watch are Javier Fernandez and Alejandro Moreno.
FC Bayern Munich
Bayern should have a competitive team with some pretty interesting players. The leader of the team will most likely be Sebastian Hartmann, who has already worked his way into a regular role in Bayern’s ProB third division team. The 2006-born Russian talent Ivan Kharchenkov is also a must-watch player - despite being two years younger than the competition. This will be a good opportunity for Luis Wulff to show what he can do at a higher level while scouts will undoubtedly be looking to see how Martin Kalu has developed since being one of the leaders for Germany at the FIBA U16 European Challengers last summer. A couple of other names are Christian Skladanowski, Aleksa Vucetic, Jakob Vigneault and Ognjen Cocic.
Orange 1 Bassano
Bassano are a new name on the youth scene in Europe, but the man in charge is well known in the game. Giancomo Rossi was the long-time GM at Stellazzurra Rome and he has opened a new academy. Generally, the thought on this group is they are talented but still a bit younger. So this looks like a team where you say ah I remember him playing at the ANGT way back then. A couple of the top players for this team will be the 2005-born Moussa Bamba and his Mali compatriot Tiefing Diawara, who was born in 2006. There is also the 2006-born Leonardo Valesin. Other names who could shine: Dame Elhadji Sarr, 2006-born former Crvena Zvezda Belgrade playmaker Miroslav Bogdanovic and Marko Lukanoski, a 2006-born from North Macedonia.
Real Madrid
The reigning champions will once again be completely loaded. Not only will they have Eli John Ndiaye and Juan Nunez, who have both have already debuted with Real’s senior team, but they also have Henri Veesar, Urban Klazar, Baba Miller and Jan Vide - making it a sextet who played in Real’s 81-78 victory over FC Barcelona in the ANGT Championship Game last season. There are also Ismaila Diagne and Nikola Cebrian, who were on the team in the ANGT qualifier in Istanbul. Real wouldn’t be Real if they didn’t have a couple of leading youngsters who can play later seasons. Filling that category are 2005-born Swiss guard Kaya Mutambirwa and 2006-born Russia playmaker Egor Demin. Real once again are the favorite to win the Munich tournament - which they won three straight years from 2017-18 to 2019-20 - and become the first club win claim three straight ANGT crowns since CSKA Moscow in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Zalgiris Kaunas
The two-time champs will have a solid group of players in Munich. The main guy to watch will be Motiejus Krivas, who is scoring in double figures in Lithuania’s second division and will be back after playing last season in Istanbul. The 2005-born big man Mantas Kocanas also played in the ANGT last season. Another 2005-born player to watch will be Joshua Bonga, younger brother of German NBA playmaker Isaac Bonga. There is also Petras Padegimas, who is averaging a double-double in the RKL third division.
